Yep its real… the Great British Weld Off

posted 30.09.2013
There has been much talk in the construction industry of an impending skills shortage and the work that is being done to encourage the next generation of construction workers into the sector. However one organisation is looking to showcase existing talent as well as encourage new careers in the industry with the ever so slightly plagiarised Great British Weld-Off. If you had not worked it out, it is constructions answer to the immensely popular baking competition Great British Bake Off.

The competition has been organised by equipment suppliers Morris Site Machinery. Teams of four will not only need to demonstrate skill but also creativity and safety awareness in a series of competitive challenges. A panel of judges (I am sure this will include construction answer to Mary and Paul) will then decide which team will take the spoils. In this instance a host of prizes including one year training programme with Morris Site Machinery and co-sponsor Speedy.

It is hoped that the competition will act as a platform for apprentices and students to kick start a career in the industry as well as create recognition for the traditional skill of welding.

Entrants are currently being sort for the competition which is separated into two rounds, the first of which is paper based with a closing deadline on the 10th January 2014. The ?Weld-Off? will be held in February 2014.

Recipro looks forward to hearing more about the Weld Off in the New Year.
